Pr??a is the source of life and pr??a is life per se. In yoga, pr???y?ma starts with the three basic principles of controlling breath: inhale, exhale, and pause. The passage of the body (na??) is purified through regulation of breathing and as na?? is purified, the impurities in body are cleared, stabilizing metabolism and nervous system, harmonizing the components of body; and also, it keeps the mind calm. Specifically, respiratory training with sound has a significant effect mentally and physically by awakening as well as stabilizing the nervous system through resonance. Hence, sound breathing can be fully utilized as a mechanism of mental and physical healing. The basic methods of effects, precautions, and healing plans of sound breathing are explained in this paper. In modern times, breathing practice in yoga is emphasized by Hatha Yoga, which focuses on the posture (?sana) and breathing (pr???y?ma). Therefore, the contents are based on Yoga S?tra and focus on the representative Hatha Yoga scriptures such as Hatayogaprad?pika, Ghera??a Sa?hita and within this scope, only breathings based on sound were selected. Ocean breathing (ujj?y? pr???y?ma), cooling breathing (s?tal? pr???y?ma), bellows breathing (bhastrik? pr???y?ma), and humming bee breathing (bhr?mar? pr???y?ma) produce constant volume, and long soft sounds, and thus were effective in stabilizing bronchial tubes, pulmonary function, and components of the body in the cardiovascular system. In addition, regular breathing stabilizes the nervous system, improves memory, provides peace mentally and physically, and helps reaching the superconscious status, Sam?dhi. However, sound breathing should be performed in steps with the guidance of a Yoga master for at least 12 weeks. It should be performed in steps according to the characteristics of the respiratory practitioner as follows: ? Determine the physical condition of the practitioner ? Identify the physical and mental condition and the cause of the conditions ? Determine the respiratory method suitable for the condition ? Specify the duration, step, time, number of times, and location. ? After each session, fill out questionnaire and conduct continuous training. When continuous and proper sound breathing training is achieved, na?? becomes purified and the sensory organs will be withdrawn to control the scattering of body and mind, developing stable condition mentally and physically, thus leading to the final peace and purified status of freedom (mok?a).
